Adding Videos to Your Website

Adding Videos to Your Website

Let’s look at how to add videos to your Website. The first thing to know is that every website is set differently, so we won’t be providing specific step-by-step instructions in this video. However, we can give you a basic overview of how it works and send you in the right direction.

What is Embedding?

Unlike text, photos, and other content displayed on your website, video files are rarely delivered directly from your website’s server. Instead, the video file is hosted on a video platform like Vimeo or YouTube and then that file is referenced when it appears on your website. We recommend using Vimeo to host your website’s videos for a variety of reasons, but instructions for uploading to all the major video hosting platforms are included in the Learning Center.

This process can get confusing, quick, but the important thing to know is that after the video is uploaded to the video hosting site, you just need to add a little bit of computer code to the web page where you want the video to be displayed. This computer code is called “embed code” and can be easily found in your video’s settings. Once added to your website, this code will make the proper connections so that your video plays smoothly.

When to Bring in the Pros

While this process is relatively easy if you know what you are doing, it’s usually best to talk to your web developer about adding videos to your website. If you are the DIY type, you can find more specific instructions by searching Google using the search terms:

“Embedding Video”

Where Your Videos are Hosted (i.e. “Vimeo” or “YouTube”)

Your Website Platform (i.e. “Wordpress”)
